Our History

On January 23, 1957 Laerskool Kiepersol was founded by Dr Vorster with only 30 learners on the site of the present Hazyview Protea Hotel. The first headmaster was Mr W.N. van Wyk, who was succeeded by Mr D.A. Oosthuizen, officially appointed from January 1959. Due to a shortage of space and water, the school was moved to the previous site opposite the Numbi Hotel, on July 28, 1959. At that stage the number of learners had already grown to 52. In 1962 Mr E.T. Logie was appointed acting head and was succeeded in 1963 by Mr J.D. Leonard, appointed in permanent capacity. Subsequently, Mr R. Barnard served as headmaster from July 1965 until the end of 1980. The name of the school was officially changed to Laerskool Numbi on August 14, 1968. The principal’s post was then taken up by Mr Johan van der Merwe, who served for many years until he retired in 2006. Mr A.S. Coetzee, the present head, was appointed in January 2007. In 1990 the number of learners increased to 220. In 1992 the new and current school grounds were handed over to the building contractor for the erection of a brand-new school. Amid great excitement the new premises were occupied in August 1993. Laerskool Numbi is a parallel medium school and the languages of instruction are Afrikaans and English. We are a multi-racial school and live according to the core values of the school. Laerskool Numbi has grown a lot since then and overall, we are excelling. On the sport front, our name are frequently among those of the leaders in various leagues. Culturally, we also prove our expertise as shown every year by our flair for the stage. Former Numbi pupils are frequently elected as head boy or head girl at high schools, where many other find themselves elected to student governing bodies. As always, it remains the objective of the staff at Numbi to offer each child the opportunity to grow and develop holistically, in order that he/she might ultimately reach their full potential and make us proud.
